The project involved the complete reconstruction of an abandoned structure within a NYC park and its adaptive reuse as a community and family center. The completed structure houses a 400 seat theater, a full size gymnasium, a 75 foot indoor swimming pool, a senior center, cafeterias, health center and an interior court.
The theater offers productions for children and for the community at large and is occasionally used for conferences. The gymnasium doubles as a ballroom. Two cafeterias overlooking the indoor court are used for art exhibits and receptions.
External additions, including eccentric pyramids, realign the building axis, integrate the building with its setting, and serve as entrances to the building and to the theater. Exterior and interior colors are used to strengthen the formal qualities of the design.
