A faceted design in a park setting amid mid-rise towers presents its sculptural roof to its neighbors as a fifth elevation

Within Soundview Park in the Bronx, this 4,000 square foot, one-storey structure serves the dual functions of a headquarters for the park’s maintenance staff, and a rest stop and information point for the public.

Forming an iconic marker for the park, the building features a sculpturally faceted metal roof which hovers atop masonry exterior walls. Separating the earth bound walls from the floating roof is a band of fenestration.

The highlight of the interior is a multi-purpose space with a high ceiling of floating wood “clouds”, which are faceted to enhance acoustics and echo the forms of the roof above. To further integrate exterior with interior, manganese iron spot brick which is used outside is used to form the walls and partitions within the multi-purpose space.
